A Mahnomen County sheriff’s deputy has died about eighteen months after he was shot in the line of duty.

Sheriff Dough Krier says Chris Dewey died Monday morning. He had been in hospice care in North Branch. Dewey was shot in the head and stomach in February 2009 while checking out a report of shots fired in a Mahnomen neighborhood.

An accomplice in Dewey’s death has agreed to testify against suspected trigger-man Thomas Fairbanks, who is already charged with nearly two dozen felonies.  Prosecutors may amend those charges.
