Mr. High School Sports may have had his hands full covering Week 4 of football season, but let the record show he did not forget the first WPIAL championship event of the 2010-11 academic year.
I would like to extend a belated congratulations to Plum junior Ronit Yurovsky (pictured here), who captured her second straight gold medal in the 2010 Class AAA Girls’ Singles Tennis Championship at Pine-Richland High School on a windy Friday afternoon.
Last week Yurovsky had to forfeit her section title match against Sara Perelman of Shady Side Academy due to an injury to her serving arm. But Yurovsky, making her third straight singles final appearance, enjoyed the last laugh in the rematch with a 6-0, 7-5 decision over the top-seeded senior to capture the WPIAL crown.
Congratulations are also in order for Spencer Caravaggio of Quaker Valley; the sophomore triumphed over Brownsville junior Sarah Shashura 6-1, 6-3 to win the Class AA Girls’ Singles Championship. Shashura was going for her second gold medal in three years after winning in 2008 as a representative of California, which did not have a varsity tennis team at the time.
Meanwhile, in the Class AAA Consolation Match it was Stephanie Smith of Peters Township over Callie Frey of Mount Lebanon 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-0; and Samantha Gohh of Sewickley Academy defeated Elise Carter of South Park 6-1, 6-3 in the Class AA Consolation Match.
And one more tip of my tennis cap goes to Yurovsky, Perelman, Caravaggio, Shashura, and Gohh for qualifying for the PIAA Girls’ Singles Playoffs, which start in two weeks…congrats to all on a great season, and good luck at states!
