State and U.S. flags are at half-staff at all public buildings in Minnesota Sunday  in honor of firefighters who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty ordered Sunday’s display in accordance with a 2001 federal law memorializing fallen firefighters.

On average, 100 firefighters die in the line of duty every year in the United States. Since 1881, 187 Minnesota firefighters died in the line of duty.

A Minnesota firefighter, Barry DeLude, will be among those honored Sunday at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Emmitsburg, Maryland. DeLude, a Minneapolis firefighter, died on Feb. 13, 2007.
