Good Question: 'Reply All' To Your Good Questions

By Jason DeRusha, WCCO-TV

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Concrete or blacktop? Why do Twins games start at 7:37 p.m.? And why do I blush when I get embarrassed? Those are some of the Good Questions viewers sent to Jason DeRusha this week.

We have been getting a lot of Good Questions about the Minnesota Twins and most of them we can't even put on TV. But, Paul in Eagan is one of many who want to know: Why are games starting at such crazy times?

The Twins tell me that Major League Baseball picks those 5:07 p.m. and 7:37 p.m. start times. It's about TV -- the networks do a little intro, toss in some commercials, and then throw the first pitch.

During the regular season, the home team decides. Twins games usually start 10 after the hour.

In Chicago, the White Sox start night games at 7:11, which is part of a sponsorship deal with 7-Eleven convenience stores.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says it's all about money. MnDOT has to perform a life cycle cost analysis for both surfaces for every highway project.

They run the numbers to see how much it will cost up front, and then how much will it continue to cost to maintain.

In recent years, the up-front cost of asphalt and concrete have grown pretty close, so maintenance has emerged as the key element.

Hallie in Walker wondered, "Why do we turn red when we're embarassed?"

Blame adrenaline. When we're embarrassed, scared or excited, our body releases adrenaline, which makes our blood vessels dilate -- opening up to let more blood and oxygen through.

Most veins don't respond to adrenaline, and scientists don't know why the veins in our faces do.

But the veins here open up and the extra blood turns us red.
