State Rep. Dave Dill of Crane Lake will receive a donated kidney this week.
The 55-year-old DFLer has had kidney problems and weight-related diabetes for years. He resolved his diabetes by undergoing gastric-bypass surgery two years ago and losing more than 150 pounds.
However, the damage to his kidneys wasn’t reparable. He says his kidney function slowly deteriorated to the point that a transplant was necessary.
Dill is running for his fifth straight term in the statehouse. He’s being challenged by Republican Jim Tuomala of Babbitt.
The surgery is Tuesday. Dill tells the Duluth News Tribune he’ll be in the hospital about five days, and full recovery will take about a month. He says he hopes to resume a limited legislative workload within a few weeks.
