One of the oldest trees in Minneapolis will have to come down today — but a new tree will be planted in its place. Experts believe the burr oak began as a seedling in the year 1677. It’s located above the Mississippi River gorge in Riverside Park. It recently died after declining for years. Top branches of the tree will be given to artists for carving bowls, cups and ornaments. And the 17 foot hollow trunk will remain in place.
