NO ONE’S EVER ASKED ME ABOUT HOW I COME UP WITH THE IDEAS FOR THESE VIGNETTES, SO I THOUGHT I’D SHARE THE PATH THAT LED ME TO THIS WEEK’S STORY.

EVERY MONDAY A NEW FOOTBALL WEEK BEGINS AND I START TO THINK ABOUT SOME ASPECT OF THIS WEEK’S GAME THAT COULD BE NEATLY SPUN INTO A STORY LASTING NO MORE THAN 210 SECONDS.

I START TO GET CONCERNED WHEN WEDNESDAY COMES AND GOES WITHOUT A HINT OF A SUITABLE SUBJECT.

BY WEDNESDAY NIGHT I‘M IN FULL-SCALE PANIC MODE AND THAT’S WHEN I BEING TO PROBE BOTH MY EXTENSIVE LIBRARY AND THE INTERNET.

THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS THERE, BUT SOMETIMES THE ROUTE TO GET TO IT IS AS COMPLICATED AS AN EPISODE OF CSI WEST LAFAYETTE.

SO WHAT DOES ALL THIS HAVE TO DO WITH PURDUE?

WELL, THANKS TO ABOUT A DOZEN OR MORE SEARCHES ON GOOGLE AND BING, I SUDDENDLY STRUCK PAYDIRT. I HAVEN’T HAD THE TIME TO TOTALLY VERIFY THIS INFORMATION, BUT, BASED ON EVERYTHING I COULD FIND, IT’S THE TRUTH.

AND IT GOES LIKE THIS. WHAT COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY HAS PRODUCED QUARTERBACKS WHO, AS A GROUP, HAVE THROWN THE MOST TOUCHDOWN PASSES IN THE HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE?

I TRIED IT OUT ON SOME OF MY MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE FOOTBALL TRIVIA EXPERTS AND THEY CAME UP WITH SOME PRETTY OBVIOUS GUESSES, MOST NOTABLY SOUTHERN CAL, NOTRE DAME, ALABAMA AND WASHINGTON.

TO WHICH MY RESPONSE WAS NO, NO, NO AND NO.

THE ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION, AS FAR AS I’M ABLE TO FIND, IS PURDUE.

THINK ABOUT IT. WE’RE TALKING HALL OF FAME CALIBER QUARTERBACKS SUCH AS LEN DAWSON, BOB GRIESE AND FUTURE HALL OF FAMER DREW BREES. MIKE PHIPPS, GARY DANIELSON, JIM EVERETT AND KYLE ORTEN ADD NICELY TO THAT LIST. AND YOU EVEN HAVE TO INCLUDE THE LIKES OF CECIL ISBELL, SCOTT CAMPBELL AND MARK HERRMANN.

DAWSON LEADS THAT GROUP WITH 239 CAREER TOUCHDOWN PASSES. JIM EVERETT IS SECOND AT 203, BUT HE’S LIKELY TO BE PASSED THIS WEEK WITH BREES WHO’S SITTING ON 202. THAT’S 634 TOUCHDOWNS AMONG JUST THREE QUARTERBACKS. AS A GROUP, THEY’VE CONNECTED FOR 1,096 TOUCHDOWNS.

IMPRESSIVE INDEED.

BUT YOU CAN’T STOP THERE. A LIST LIKE THAT JUST BEGS FOR COMPARISONS.

I MEAN, HOW GOOD IS 1,096? HOW DOES IT COMPARE, FOR INSTANCE, WITH ANOTHER BIG TEN SCHOOL LIKE, SAY, MINNESOTA.

AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, PURDUE’S NUMBERS ARE SLIGHTLY MORE IMPRESSIVE.

SO HOW MANY TOUCHDOWNS HAVE GOPHER QUARTERBACKS THROWN IN THE NFL? REMEMBER THAT SANDY STEPHENS WENT TO CANADA WHERE MONTREAL TURNED HIM INTO AN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN. JOHN HANKINSON SAT ON THE VIKINGS BENCH FOR A FEW MINUTES AND MIKE HOHENSEE BECAME A PASSING LEGEND IN ARENA FOOTBALL.

TONY DUNGY BECAME A DEFENSIVE BACK WHO EVENTUALLY DID THROW EIGHT PASSES, THREE OF WHICH WERE CAUGHT BY TEAMMATEAS AND TWO OF WHICH WOUND UP IN THE HANDS OF THE DEFENSE.

COREY SAUTER GOT IN ONE GAME IN WHICH HE THREW NINE PASSES WITH NO TOUCHDOWNS.

PAUL GIEL CHOSE BASEBALL AND TRIED TO THROW STRIKES INSTEAD OF TOUCHDOWNS.

SPURGEON WYNN, WHO DROPPED OUT OF MINNESOTA IN FAVOR OF SW TEXAS STATE, HAD A SINGLE NFL TOUCHDOWN PASS, BUT WE CAN’T REALLY COUNT HIM.

AND SO THE ANSWER AS TO HOW MANY NFL TOUCHDOWNS PASSES HAVE BEEN THROWN BY FORMER GOPHER QUARTERBACKS, APPEARS TO BE JUST ONE, AND THAT CAME ON A FAKE FIELD GOAL BY GINO CAPPELLETTI 49 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH.

ISN’T THE INTERNET WONDERFUL? DON’T YOU JUST LOVE THIS STUFF?
