Snowflakes May Fall This Weekend

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Two days ago, many in Minnesota were getting some late-year use out of their shorts and skirts. Going into this weekend, some may be looking for their snow shovels.

Some of the first flakes of the season are expected to fall in the state in the next few days.

"There's a good chance for several inches of wet snow to accumulate on grass in the Twin Cities," said Augustyniak. "The storm itself will actually start late Friday morning as rain in southeastern Minnesota. Precipitation will develop here tomorrow night into Saturday."

Though the Twin Cities may see some snow, the possibility exists that other areas of the state further west and north may see more significant snow activity.

"The highest amounts will be west of the immediate metro area, including St. Cloud, Willmar, Buffalo. An early estimate is for around 2 to 4 inches in those areas," said Augustyniak.

The Twin Cities metro area will be on the line between the areas that get mostly rain over the next few days, which will be to the south and east, and the areas that will be getting mostly snow, Augustyniak said.

"Our best chance for wet snow in the metro will come Saturday evening, and we could see a coating to an inch of slushy accumulation by Sunday morning," he said.

It's not likely that this system will cause any significant problems on the roads.

High temperatures throughout the weekend are expected to top out in the low- to mid-40s.
