State Officials Urge Motorists Not to 'Veer for Deer'

By Laura Oakes, NewsRadio 830 WCCO

(WCCO) -- Officials with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety are out with a message in hopes of reducing car-deer crashes during this time of year when deer are most active: "DON'T VEER FOR DEER."

State Patrol Captain Matt Langer says the best thing drivers can do if a deer comes in their path is slow down, and not try to veer around it.

He says even if the deer is hit, it's safer than going off the road or into oncoming traffic.

Since 2007, there have been more than 8,300 deer-vehicle crashes in Minnesota, which resulted in 19 deaths. Sixteen of those deaths involved motorcyclists.
