One Finalist Named In U Of M President Search

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- One finalist has been named in the search for someone to replace University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks. The Board of Regents voted Friday to interview Dr. Eric Kaler for the post. He is Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Stony Brook University in New York. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Kaler earned his P.H.D. in chemical engineering in 1982.
Regent Patricia Simmons headed up the search process, which she said pulled in remarkable candidates.
"We didn't rely on who happens to be looking for a job, we went after people who are doing excellent work to bring to this university and to this state," said Simmons.
Kaler was among a field of four semi-finalists going into Friday's meeting, but two of them withdrew from consideration and he is the only one to be granted an interview. Kaler will visit the university next Wednesday and Thursday. The board hopes to name new president by the end of the year.

Current president Bruininks is stepping down at the end of June. He plans to stay at the U of M as a faculty member at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.
