Mike Max’s News And Notes

If you’re keeping score in the search for a new University of Minnesota head football coach, know they’ve narrowed it down to about 20 candidates. The most coveted are those who are still coaching teams that they will not be able to talk to until the end of their seasons. And don’t expect a high-profile coach, like a Tubby Smith in basketball, to fall their way.

North Dakota State University brought a big crowd to the Metrodome and next year when they play the Gophers they’ve already indicated they will buy all unsold suites.

Former Tampa Lightning general manager Brian Lawton is spending the year scouting hockey players and teams hoping to get back into business next season.

Former Hopkins guard Jared Nuness is working as an assistant coach at Baylor University.

Former Minnesota North and UConn basketball player Khalid El-Amin was set to work as a personal instructor but came out of retirement to play in the Ukraine this winter.

The Hall of Fame has not requested it, so look for the Timberwolves to put together a display with the game ball to be presented to Kevin Love from his 31-31 night last week.

The Minnesota Wild’s Nick Schultz took a puck to the mouth that meant three root canals.

“There’s a few gone but it’s coming back … It’s not as bad as it looks, it’s good it’s on the bottom, I can hide it a bit … The worst part is just the freezing, having them jam in the needles in there and once it’s frozen it’s not too bad but it’s something that has to be done for the long term gain, I think,” said Schultz.
