Republicans Ask: More Votes Than Registered Voters?

By Bruce Hagevik, NewsRadio 830 WCCO

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer is asking the Minnesota Supreme Court to make sure each precinct around the state properly determined the number of votes against the number of people who registered to vote in early November.

It's a process called reconciliation, which is required by Minnesota law. State Republican chair, Tony Sutton, said he has heard from a handful of election judges who claim the process was not followed.

Emmer trails DFL candidate, Mark Dayton, with an expected recount to begin later this month.

Political science professor David Schultz, of Hamline University, called the move by Republicans, a political ploy.

"The entire purpose of the recount when it eventually starts after Thanksgiving is to count the ballots and , in part, to see if there are any discrepancies," said Schultz.

He says reconciliation will be handled during the recount and Schultz doesn't believe the Supreme Court will consider the petition.
