Icy Conditions Made For Busy Emergency Rooms

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Hennepin County Medical Center's emergency room was very busy Saturday night and all day Sunday from the icy conditions.

Besides all the car accident victims, many people were slipping and falling on sidewalks and breaking their bones or hitting their heads.

By 1 a.m. Sunday, 42 people were already at HCMC because they had fallen.

And the fall victims kept showing up on Sunday as people went outside and didn't realize it was so icy.

"Normally our visits are about everything in general so to have something that's ascribed to a just single event and 20 percent of our visits for that single event, that's a big statistic for us," said emergency room Dr. Jeff Ho. "It was extremely stressful. What I would say is it taxed our system and we're still digging out from it today."
