Kline Urges Labor Dept. To Help Lockheed Workers

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- U.S. Rep. John Kline is calling on the U.S. Labor Department to help Lockheed Martin Corp. employees in Eagan who face the loss of their jobs or having to move.

Kline says Lockheed's plans to close the plant threaten the economic well-being of workers and their families. He sent a letter Wednesday to U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis asking that the department's resources be made available to help those workers.

Lockheed said last week it plans to close the Eagan plant by 2013, eliminating or moving about 1,000 jobs.

The Maryland-based defense contractor makes components for the Navy's P-3 Orion anti-submarine plane at the plant.

Kline is the ranking Republican on the House Education and Labor Committee and is in line to chair the committee when the 112th Congress convenes.
