Man Shot After Chase, Trying To Run Over Police

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Red Lake man was shot by police after they said he tried to run over officers following a crime spree that included 10 thefts and burglaries as well as the theft of three vehicles.

Police said at 5 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day they got a call from a man in Turtle Lake Township reporting that his vehicle had been taken and another nearby vehicle was on fire.

Police learned that the vehicle on fire was stolen from a nearby residence and that a third stolen vehicle was found on fire near that home too.

Deputies also learned that firearms had been taken from the Turtle Lake Township home.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office said the suspect, Fabian Wayne English, 24, was spotted driving in the vehicle taken in Turtle Lake Township. But, when officers tried to stop him, he refused, and that started a police chase.

The pursuit entered the Red Lake reservation, where tribal police took over. English was finally apprehended on Highway 1 after he attempted to run over Red Lake officers and was shot once.

The Sheriff's office followed his trail of crimes all the way back and determined that had committed 10 thefts and burglaries in the Beltrami County area, as well the vehicle thefts.

Meanwhile, English was treated for the gunshot wound at North Country Regional Hospital. He remains in custody pending multiple charges of assault against tribal police, burglary, theft and fleeing and officer.

Most of the stolen property was recovered and returned to the owners.

The FBI, Red Lake Department of Public Safety, Beltrami County Sheriff's Office and the Bemidji Police Department continue to investigate.
