3 Still Hospitalized In Rochester Deadly Hit-And-Runs
ROCHESTER (WCCO) -- The victims injured in Saturday's deadly hit-and-run in downtown Rochester are continuing to recover at St. Marys Hospital.
Thirty-year-old Tom Chan and 23-year-old Becky Dass each broke a leg. They also have scrapes and bruises.
The two had just finished up a shift at the Kahler Hotel and were walking to a nearby bar. As they crossed Broadway and Center Street, a car came straight towards them.
Chan said both he and Dass dove to opposite sides of the street.
Little did they know that moments before the accused driver, Christopher Trautman, had just hit two other people four blocks away.
According to police, those two people were 23-year-old Austin Melville and 22-year-old Chris Glenski. Melville later died at the hospital and Glenski was critically injured.
After the crash on Broadway and Center Street, police said Trautman stopped driving.
"There the car came to a stop and the driver fled, leaving a passenger in the vehicle. He was apprehended in the area, about 20 minutes later, by the state patrol," said Rochester Police Sgt. Tom Faudskar.
Faudskar said they do believe alcohol was a factor in the accidents.
Trautman's history shows he was convicted of DWI in 1999. In 1998, he was convicted of drinking and driving under the age of 21. He's also been convicted of speeding four times since 1994.
