Gun Violence Is Down In Minneapolis

By Bruce Hagevik, NewsRadio 830 WCCO

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Efforts to curb firearm-related violent crimes seem to be paying off. Minneapolis is reporting a decline in gun violence.

"We have to be able to show some results and we have," said Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan.

He was referring to Project Exile, which is a combined effort of law enforcement and prosecutors in dealing with gun violence. Early results show violent crimes committed with guns were down 23 percent since mid-summer.

Police are using "predictive analysis" as a way of tracking crime and using the information to predict when and where additional crimes will occur.

The Hennepin County Attorney's office is working with the U.S. Attorney's office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in the focus on gun-related crime in Minneapolis.

"The people that we choose to go after are the people that are involved in violent crime," said Chief Dolan.

But he said there's more work to be done.
