Fate Of 'Frivolous' Challenges Up To Canvassing Board

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Thousands of Minnesota ballot challenges have been deemed frivolous in the governor's recount. It's up to a state board to figure out what to do with them.

The state Canvassing Board was to wade Friday into the ballot controversy that has caused a stir as Republican Tom Emmer vies to overtake Democrat Mark Dayton.

Emmer's team hopes to disqualify thousands of Dayton votes. But local election officials have ruled the challenges to be of little merit. Dayton's campaign had a few dozen attempted challenges called frivolous and withdrew them en masse on Thursday.

The board hasn't decided whether the give the challenges a second look before declaring a race winner. Hundreds of ballots with closer calls await board scrutiny.

Dayton led Emmer by 8,770 votes as the recount began.
