Minnesotans Shop To Hunker Down For Wintry Weekend

By Amelia Santaniello, WCCO-TV

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Lots of people are running errands before Saturday's big storm hits. Grocery stores, liquor stores and gas stations were all jam-packed Friday with people preparing for the storm.

"I am stocking up for the storm, I am," said Shelley.

Shelley says she's ready.

"I have two carts, which is very normal for me," she added.

She's got everything from milk to meats.

"It could snow for a week and I think I'm covered," she continued.

The Rainbow Foods in Lakeville said it's bringing in more employees to cover the mad dash, and it's a good thing.

"I can't believe how packed it is, everyone is here getting ready for the storm," said Kathy Hennen.

"We got enough provisions for the weekend," said Bill Leach.

"Cheetos he got, and cookies and onion dip," laughed Betty Leach. Bill Leach added pointed out they'd also gotten chicken breasts and meatloaf.

People say this storm warning is a little different than the ones in the past.

"Just because I believe the forecast this time. I think it's really coming," explained Bill Leach.

The scene was the same at Kowalski's in south Minneapolis.

"I don't like the cold, I'm not a real big snow fan, which is why I'm in Minnesota, I guess," joked Judy Bialka. "Actually I'm trying to avoid the crowds."

And the store is calling more employees to help.

"It's been really busy. It's been busier than normal. Just the anticipation. People are probably leaving the office a little early today to beat it home," said Teresa Paulson with Kowalski's.

Surdyk's Liquor Store was packed with people stocking up on adult beverages, and the store is making it easier to find your favorite beverages.

"We have online ordering, so you can place an order online and we'll have it ready for you and hold it in the store and you can come pick it up at your convenience," said Melissa Surdyk with Surdyk's Liquor Store.

There were also big crowds at the Mall of America Friday night. The mall has never closed because of weather and won't this weekend, either.
