Snowy Commute This Christmas

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Like a Christmas gift you didn't want and can't return, snow is once again rearing its head across most of the southern part of Minnesota.

Travel conditions on Friday morning were treacherous in parts of the Twin Cities, with anywhere from 2 to 4 inches and, in some places, exceeding that.

As of 10 a.m., there were 266 cars that went off the road or were involved in spin-outs, said Lt. Eric Roeske with the Minnesota State Patrol. He added that there were 116 crashes statewide, 12 with injuries, but no fatal accidents.

WCCO-TV meteorologist Mike Augustyniak said the snow should continue to trail off going into the afternoon. An additional inch or two of snow wouldn't be out of the question.

Those traveling north from the Twin Cities will find not as much snow as those traveling south. As of Friday morning, the snow was falling fairly heavy in the Des Moines area. Those traveling south on 35W will likely find slowed traffic conditions and possibly slippery roads.

The one saving grace this time around is that there isn't much wind, so the snow isn't whipping around much.

The latest batch of snow moves this month into a strong second place for the snowiest December on record, if not snatching the crown altogether. Going into last evening's snowfall, the Twin Cities only needed 4.5 inches of snow for the title.

Those hoping to ring in the New Year with a newly snow-free forecast may be out of luck. Another system may be bringing some significant snow over that holiday weekend, as well, so stay tuned.
