Twin Cities Area Sets Snowfall Record For December

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Twin Cities area has set a record for snowfall in December.

The National Weather Service says the area has received 6 inches as part of a Christmas Eve storm blanketing parts of the Midwest.

That pushes the monthly total to 33.4 inches, topping the previous record of 33.2 inches set in 1969.

With another week yet to go in December, meteorologist Tony Zaleski says it's likely the record will be extended further. He says new storms are expected Wednesday and Friday.

He says the Christmas Eve storm also dumped 7 inches of snow in Red Wing and 6.2 inches in Madelia.

The Minnesota State Patrol's website reports 255 vehicles slid off the roads statewide on Friday morning. It says there were 116 crashes but no fatalities.
