Wis. Man Gets 12 Years For 10th OWI Offense

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) -- A Waukesha County man who pleaded guilty to a tenth offense of drunken driving has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Charles A. Zupan Jr. told the judge Wednesday he has "hit rock bottom." The 55-year-old said he realizes he needs treatment and vowed to remain sober.

But Judge James Kieffer wasn't persuaded. He said the public needs to be protected from people like him.

The judge says he was also disturbed by comments made by Zupan's grandson. The grandson had said he doesn't like traveling with his grandfather because Zupan is so frequently drunk.

WISN-TV reports that Zupan will have to serve a minimum of nine years before he'd be eligible for any sort of early release.
