MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann said Friday that liberal commentators and legal experts would be just as welcome as conservatives to participate in a series of constitutional discussions she is organizing for members of Congress.

The Minnesota Republican and founder of the congressional tea party caucus drew criticism after Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, one of the most conservative members of the high court, agreed to appear at the first event Jan. 24. Some legal experts noted that the court could soon find itself wading into contentious political issues, including efforts to strike down President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, and said justices who appear at events sponsored by a prominent Republican could do damage to their impartiality.

But Bachmann said it’s not uncommon for Supreme Court justices to speak publically about their legal philosophies. In November, Scalia and Justice Stephen Breyer, one of the most liberal members of the court, sparred over various constitutional questions during a rare public debate sponsored by Texas Tech University Law School.

Bachmann said Democrats and Republicans would all be welcome to attend.

“The idea is just to create an opportunity for us to wrap our minds around our magnificent founding documents before we cast votes,” Bachmann said.

Bachmann said guests could include both legal scholars and commentators, and future seminars are likely to include presentations by former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese and lawyer Mark Levin, a conservative commentator and radio host. She said other Supreme Court justices are also considering her invitation.

While so far only conservative speakers are planned, Bachmann said she’d be interested in lining up liberal speakers as well.

“This is bipartisan and we are interested in hearing from voices all the way along the spectrum,” she said.

Bachmann, who has drawn a national following with frequent guest appearances on cable and network news shows, broke fundraising records with a $13 million haul en route to winning her third term in Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District. She hinted earlier this week at a possible presidential run in 2012, and plans a trip later this month to the early caucus state of Iowa.

Bachmann said Friday that she intended to deliver speeches in Iowa and other early-primary states because she wants to help launch a conversation that shapes the agenda of the next Republican candidate for president. She said she wants that candidate to be a “strong, courageous constitutional conservative,” but wouldn’t answer questions about how seriously she is considering a possible bid.

“It’s a mistake to spend a year speculating on who the eventual nominee will be,” Bachmann said. “We need to spend the next year talking about the issues that will define the race.”

    1. ES says:

I thought that everybody would be allowed to speak their about their beliefs and ideologies equally. Apparently you feel that only the left should be heard. My, how open and inclusive you are. I believe that if democrats go they might learn something just like the republicans might learn something from the democrats.

    2. Ivan Miller says:

This is not about right or left, DFL or GOP. It’s about one very strange woman who has said that it cost 200 million dollars a day for the President to go to Inda. Or that there were one million people at the Tea Party “Event” back in Sept. If she doesn’t have actual facts she just makes things up! She is an embarrassment!

  2. helper says:

This woman is … CREEPY… She makes Minnesota the laughing stock of America.

  5. soapboxgod says:

While it is commendable to revisit the Constitution and in going forward legislatively to consider whether or not such legislation is Constitutionally valid or not, the fact of the matter is that the Constitution has been shredded to pieces by all 3 branches of government and both major parties. As such, there would exist far more credibility with regards to this (mostly symbolic) gesture is Republicans weren’t using it so much as an attempt to undo Obama’s initiatives but were too willing to apply this same Neo-Constitutional strategy/initiative towards Obama’s predecessor (i.e., Patriot Act, Warrantless Domestic spying, suspension of Habeas Corpus, et al.)

  6. Bob says:

The left is always preaching tolerance try practicing what you peach…..

  7. Bill says:

Bachmann is CREEPY & CRAZY and I’m a Republican!

Since her babbling on the possible run to the White House I have received 5 comments from customers from New Mexico, Texas and N. Carolina asking me just what we have in the water up here. MN is spooky odd when it comes to politicians. :-O

  8. b says:

  9. Victim Du Jour says:

What does Republicans have to feel guilty about? You’re pretend make believe paranoid delusions of grandeur?

It was a Registered Democrat spewing hate about President Bush and Enron on his website right before slamming his airplane into an IRS building.

    1. Jeff Hamell says:

yo meathead – you got some of that tobaccy to share

  10. Craig Mensing says:

The concept of open discussion about an issue as important as our Constitution should not be used as a platform for spewing the kind of intolerance that I am seeing on this discussion board. Those of you who are vomiting the hateful and degrading comments should be embarrassed and ashamed of your comments. Grow up, act like an adult and be civil, name calling, abusive comments, real bias and generalizations without thought only show your lack of intelligence and tolerance.

    1. Victim Du Jour says:

Intolerance is free speech, we live in a free society. People can think and debate anything they want.

Calling everything racist, homophobe, sexist and “Intolerant” does not circumvent the 1st Amendment.

  11. helper says:

OOOH, you must have been a psychology major at the ‘ol community college. It shows your age using terminology not used since the 50’s.

    If I type s l o w e r perhaps you might understand better, duffer…

    1. Ben O. says:

Brilliant helper! You Da Iddgittt of the Day. Congrats! 😉

    2. Ignorance must be bliss says:

So you claim to be educated but the way that you communicate would tell otherwise. How many well educated people have you ever met in your life that just go around calling people a moron? Here’s an idea, maybe you should put your “education” to better use and start a study of some sort. Preferably far away from the U.S.A and away from any internet so that people can have a conversation and not be bombarded with stupidity claiming to be intelligence. Look at all your posts here, how many of them have any kind of information? It is sad that you go on a community web page for editorials and just mock people instead of using it for what it is, an opinions page. If you do not agree with the comments that is ok, but that does not mean that everyone is stupid and that you trump all! A saying comes to mind when I read your posts… It is better to be thought of as an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. I would strongly recommend that you think about this for a long time.

    1. Ignorance must be bliss says:

Is this lost in some sort of translation?

  15. lib says:

I notice a great deal of insulting remarks and ridicule, while in college I had an extremely liberal professor, who said to discredit someone you can’t beat with an honest argument, go to ridicule, it is very childish, but highly effective.
