Hastings Cop Accused Of Stealing Bottle Opener From Bar

HASTINGS (WCCO) -- A Hastings police officer has been charged with theft in an unusual criminal case where he allegedly stole a wine bottle opener from a bar, according to Eagan Police.

According to the criminal complaint, off-duty Hastings police officer Rene Doffing, 47, allegedly entered a Green Mill in Hastings on Nov. 22, 2010 and stole a wine bottle opener while the bartender was not looking.

A witness, who was an off-duty officer from another jurisdiction, reported the incident to a restaurant manager. The manager told police that she then went to Doffing and asked for the bottle opener. She said he initially looked surprised, but then handed over the opener to her and she left.

The bottle opener is valued at about $10.

Doffing was charged with one misdemeanor count of theft, which carries a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail and/or a maximum fine of $1,000.
