MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has sent a letter asking his Wisconsin counterpart to honor a $58.7 million debt stemming from an old tax-reciprocity agreement.

Under the agreement, taxpayers who lived in one state but worked in the other could file a single income-tax return. The agreement called for the states to reimburse each other, but Wisconsin always ended up owing Minnesota because more Wisconsin residents used the arrangement.

Minnesota officials confirmed Thursday the letter was being drafted to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. It was sent Friday.

Dayton’s letter asks that the debt be paid “in the very near future.”

Walker spokesman Cullen Werwie says the governors were scheduled to discuss the issue Friday but Dayton canceled the call.

Wisconsin officials are hoping to revive the now-defunct agreement.
