MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has sent a letter asking his Wisconsin counterpart to honor a $58.7 million debt stemming from an old tax-reciprocity agreement.

Under the agreement, taxpayers who lived in one state but worked in the other could file a single income-tax return. The agreement called for the states to reimburse each other, but Wisconsin always ended up owing Minnesota because more Wisconsin residents used the arrangement.

Minnesota officials confirmed Thursday the letter was being drafted to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. It was sent Friday.

Dayton’s letter asks that the debt be paid “in the very near future.”

Walker spokesman Cullen Werwie says the governors were scheduled to discuss the issue Friday but Dayton canceled the call.

Wisconsin officials are hoping to revive the now-defunct agreement.

Perhaps we could take Hudson in on trade! This would give us some nice riverfront property and some more taxpayers. With the additional taxpayers, maybe the GOP could honor their no new tax pledge. Most of these people already work in Minnesota and drive on our roads and do nothing to help maintain them. I’m guessing they buy their groceries and food in Minnesota to avoid paying the sales tax in Wisconsin too.

Typical rhetoric from an ignorant person.there were good reasons for reciprocity back then. Are those same reasons not still valid? Rather than sit like children and throw stones Dave, lets debate the issue of why reciprocity makes sense for a border community such as we have. THis is not Packer VIking rivalry time bud. Yes we spend most of our money in MN. Cars, clothes, appliances, gas…. If you had all the workers need for industry in MN, why hoire so many from over here? And what about the many Minnesotans who move over the border for a quality home experience for their family? Traiters?
