Rescued Puppy Needs Help For Expensive Surgery

WCCO-TV's Rachel Slavik Reports

(WCCO) -- A puppy rescued from the Lake Traverse Indian reservation won't be put up for adoption until he has an expensive surgery. If it's true that people can get a second chance, the same can be said for animals.

A week ago, dozens of puppies were living as strays on the Lake Traverse Indian reservation, and now they're going home to loving families.

"Great to get him off the street, out of the cold and into some place that has a good family for him," said Daniel Spencer, who also adopted a Lake Traverse puppy.

While other dogs are finding good homes, there's a chance Frazier, an 8-month-old German Shepherd, may never be adopted because of an injury to his leg.

A veterinarian said Frazier was likely hit by a car before his rescue. The impact fractured his leg, which is now healing incorrectly.

"He can walk, but he can't run and play like a normal puppy would," said Jean Enting of the Carver-Scott County Humane Society

The surgery to fix the injury will cost between $3,000 to $5,000.

"There would be follow up vet checks and X-rays, so that's an additional cost on top of that," said Enting

The amount is too high to be funded by the Carver Scott Humane Society. The organization is now asking for donations to pay for the surgery

"So, we do ask for special help for special cases like Frazier's," said Enting.

For a puppy that's so close to a new beginning, Frazier's second chance is still uncertain. If you'd like to help Frazier get his surgery, log onto the Carver Scott Humane Society's website or call 952-368-3553.
