Mike Caputa Named WCCO-TV News Director

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Mike Caputa has been named News Director of WCCO-TV, it was announced today by Brien Kennedy, WCCO-TV Vice President and General Manager. Caputa has held key WCCO newsroom positions since joining the station in 2002 and has been Assistant News Director since 2007. He will oversee the station's day-to-day news operation effective immediately.

"Mike has demonstrated over the past several months that he is ready to be the leader of a newsroom that every day provides Minnesotans with the best local news, weather and sports coverage," said Kennedy. "Mike has earned this opportunity through hard work and dedication and I look forward to working with him as we continue to grow our position in this great state."

Caputa has been Acting News Director at WCCO for several months. Under his direction, the station has seen dramatic growth in key demographics in all newscasts. In addition, he was responsible for the successful transition of Don Shelby's retirement on-air and for Frank Vascellaro's ascension to the 10 p.m. anchor position.

"I am mindful of the rich tradition of WCCO Television in the Twin Cities," said Caputa. "I am humbled at the opportunity to lead the WCCO newsroom and be part of Brien's management team."

Prior to becoming Assistant News Director, Caputa was Managing Editor at the station where his key responsibilities included leading daily editorial meetings and supervising the special projects unit.

Caputa was the manager in charge during the 35W bridge collapse, taking the helm of the newsroom for the first 36 hours of coverage. He has lead large station projects, including the coverage of 2008 Republican National Convention.

Caputa's career in television news began at KSTP-TV, where he worked his way through the ranks from dispatcher to the assignment desk.

A graduate from St. John's University, in Collegeville, Minn., Caputa is from the Twin Cities and lives here with his wife.
