Driver Hits Woman, Stops On Top Of Her Before Taking Off
MANKATO, Minn. (WCCO) -- Like she had done countless times before, Nancy Benshoof parked her car in the usual lot last Friday morning and was walking to her job at the Mankato Clinic. But just feet from the front door she enters every weekday, Benshoof was blind-sided.
"I don't think he stopped," she said. "'Cause he hit me and he hit my leg and I fell under the car and he drove up on top of me. And I thought I was going to die because all I could see were his two back tires. His front tire didn't go completely over me, just on top of me. I screamed so loud they could hear me in that brown house."
The driver took off, but the next car that came along stopped and helped.
"Every time I moved I could hear my bones crunching against each other," Benshoof said.
Now, she's a patient in the very hospital where she works. And a victim whose looking for answers.
Because this happened at 7 a.m., during a time when people are going to work and the parking lot is busy, police believe somebody knows something and they are asking anyone with information to come forward.
"I think it will be better for him if he comes forward and doesn't have to live like that. I haven't felt anger towards that person yet. I just feel pretty blessed to be alive," she said.
Benshoof remains hospitalized at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital with broken bones in her arm, wrist and hip.
Police do not have many leads to go on, but do have a partial description of the vehicle.
Because it is an on-going investigation, they are only telling us that it's a lighter-colored Pontiac Grand Am-type of vehicle, possibly a Sunfire or a G6.
Police say they don't believe Benshoof was hit intentionally. They say it's possible the driver also works at the clinic.
