Rescued Puppy Gets Help For Expensive Surgery

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A rescued puppy from the Lake Traverse Indian Reservation was finally able to get the surgery needed to fix his fractured leg and help him walk without pain.

Frazier, an 8-month-old German Shepherd, was up for adoption but couldn't find a home due to the injury to his leg. A veterinarian said Frazier was likely hit by a car before his rescue and the impact fractured his leg, which was healing incorrectly.

A story ran on WCCO-TV on Jan. 15, trying to raise awareness about the surgery that was needed for Frazier, which was expected to cost between $3,000 and $5,000.

The amount was too high to be funded by the Carver Scott Humane Society, so the organization asked for donations to pay for the surgery.

After the story aired, the group raised more than $2,000 for the surgery. The veterinarian also gave the organization a discount to help them afford the procedure.

Frazier had surgery Wednesday at Shamrock Animal Hospital in Rosemount. He is expected to have about 12 weeks of recovery after the surgery, but should be able to walk without pain.

The vet said because Frazier's bone had been healing incorrectly, the fractured leg was actually shorter than the other leg, which was causing pain and stress on his hip joint.

The group says they're thankful to everyone who donated money to Frazier's cause.
