9 Sickened By Gas Smell In Roseville

ROSEVILLE, Minn. (AP) -- Up to 200 people were evacuated after a strong natural gas odor was detected at a Roseville office park.

Roseville Fire Chief Tim O'Neill says firefighters could smell gas outside the building Friday. But Minnesota Public Radio News reports no dangerous levels of gas registered on the firefighters' testing meters after they shut off the gas and toured the building.

Authorities say nine people reported flu-like symptoms, such as headaches and nausea. O'Neill says seven people were treated with oxygen at the scene and two were taken to a hospital.

Firefighters could not determine what caused the gas smell. Xcel Energy and the building's managers were trying to find the possible leak.

MPR reports between 150 and 200 employees were sent home for the day.
