CBS News Coverage Of The Challenger Disaster

It was 25 years ago today that the NASA space shuttle Challenger exploded just 73 seconds after its launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla. The lives of seven were lost, including school teacher Christa McAuliffe.

Here is a clip from the live coverage from CBS News that very day. Of note is a segment roughly two-thirds into this clip which shows McAuliffe’s parents react to the explosion with slowly dawning horror.

I remember in 3rd grade the teachers talking about the contest among teachers to get on the shuttle. Some were bummed it wasn’t them. Then on the day, the school was excited because they just installed cable t.v and had live CNN.Then it exploded in front of my class. My teacher was like “ummm yeah “.Us kids didn’t think it was real.It was a lot like 9/11in that everyone couldn’t believe what they were seeing, and trying to make sense of it in the days that followed.

I was watching it on television when it happened!

I was 5 years old and in my Kindergarten class. We were so excited and hand been studying space and we couldn’t wait to watch the first teacher go into space. Shocked to see it explode and then sent home early. My mom had a hard job that day trying to explain to a little 5 year old what had just happened.

God Bless the crew of the Challenger! You will always be remembered!

I worked at Kennedy Space Center when it happened and I think of the anniversary every year. The blockhouse door with the wreath, the cold. I suspect all of us who were there relive that moment throughout our lives.

    I will never forget.

we were at Winter Haven Fl. and watched it go up and explode .we were supposed to be at the ctr. for lift off but it had been postponed several times and didn’t make it that day. I still have a parking ticket that was for parking at the center for liftoff.

I was 5 and at home from school ill when JFK was shot; I’ve seen so much in my lifetime, and I think the Challenger explosion and 911 were the two that made the biggest impression on me, because I saw both live on TV. Hearing about tragic deaths after the fact is nowhere nearly as heart-stopping as watching the event itself unfold. RIP Challenger crew.
