Site: Minn. Basketball Player Has Heart Surgery

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A western Minnesota high school basketball player who collapsed during a game has undergone emergency heart surgery, according to his CaringBridge website.

The site says 17-year-old Zach Gabbard of Perham was taken to the operating room Friday morning for surgery that was expected to last up to 10 hours. But according to The Forum, a post on the site says the surgery was completed in three hours.

The site says the surgery was successful and Gabbard's vital signs are stable, but he is still in critical condition and heavily sedated.

Gabbard collapsed on the court during a game in Glyndon on Jan. 20. He was taken to Sanford Health in Fargo, N.D., and later transferred to University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview.
