1 Year Later, Still No Answers In Man's Homicide
NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. (WCCO) -- One year after a New Brighton man was found dead in his home, detectives still haven't made any arrests in the case.
Judie Goodwin found her husband Lee's body at the foot of the stairs on Jan. 29, 2010. At first, investigators thought Lee Goodwin's fall was an accident. They later found his wallet in a nearby dumpster and ruled his death a homicide.
All around Goodwin's home, there are reminders of her late husband Lee, reminders that don't always conjure up the happiest memories.
"I walk down the steps and see him laying there," she said.
When you love someone for 48 years, a year without them would be tough for anyone.
"Everyday of my life I think about Lee and what happened," said Goodwin.
But, when their life is cut short because of a seemingly random crime, for Judie, the loss was almost too much.
"The only thing that's kept me sane this year is keeping my job and going to work everyday," she said.
Twelve months after his death, she can't help but think about the experiences she no longer shares with Lee. From camping trips, to time with the grandchildren, closure is a long way off.
"I really would like some peace of mind to know what happened that day," said Goodwin.
However, investigators are no closer to finding the killer.
"We've pretty much run out of leads to follow up on," said Det. Gary Sykes of the New Brighton Police Department.
A frustrating scenario for New Brighton police, who have a personal stake in this case as well.
"Just about everyone on the department knew Lee, he was a good man," said Sykes.
Police believe Lee was attacked and either fell or was pushed down the stairs. He then had a heart attack. His death is considered a homicide.
