Some Churches Cancel Super Bowl Sunday Services

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Having the Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl apparently is too much competition for some Milwaukee area churches.

The Journal Sentinel reports that rather than going up against the big game, some churches are canceling their Sunday afternoon and evening services this weekend.

St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Cedarburg is among churches rescheduling for the Super Bowl. Pastor Tom Eichenberger says Sunday evening Mass “is a bit of a luxury,” and he has no problem canceling a service “when it falls on a legal holy day like Super Bowl Sunday.”

Other churches are sticking to their Sunday schedules but are acknowledging the Super Bowl. Some churches are collecting food and donations to fight hunger as part of the Souper Bowl of Caring.

Church has its value in community, charity, and social aspects-the metaphysical claims of the religious are absurd and immoral. If we could only remove the superstitious and divisive ideas from religion (that torturing and killing another will expiate us from our wrongdoings, etc) then the whole enterprise may have value. Personally, spending time with family and friends watching a game is more meaningful than humbling oneself before the unknown, unseen, unprovable, and unfalsifiable entity. Peace.

It doesn’t say they are cancelling all Sunday services. Just afternoon and evening.

I guess God is not convienient for some people.

People are more convenient than any god; we can SEE them, FEEL them, TOUCH them, and LOVE them. Besides, which “God” are you referring too? There are many (just go back in history a bit and there are literally thousands). Man has invented gods since the dawn of time to explain the unknown and comfort him. We don’t need these silly myths anymore to be good to others and to ourselves. Peace.

I don’t think it will be just churches shutting down…I am sure that stores, malls, and other entities will also shut down.
