MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — On a recent visit to Florida, WCCO caught up with Cretin Derham Hall and former Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke who is now in charge of the Madden Football Academy to develop high school and college age prospects.
“The teaching of the proper fundamentals have gone to the wayside, so I wanted to use the facility and bring in qualified coaches. I use all qualified coaches and bring something special here,” said Weinke.
In Fort Myers, Apple Valley’s David Fischer, a former gopher and first-round draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens has become one of the minor league’s top defenseman for the Florida Everblades.
“It is an interesting time for me. I’m 22 years old and I’m done with school and now I’m in the mix of all rest of the professional hockey players, so it’s kind of up to me to hopefully control my own destiny,” said Fischer.
Eden Prairie quarterback Brian Athey graduated from high school early and is already enrolled at West Virginia where he will play football.
His roommate is last year’s Minnesota Mr. Basketball, Kevin Noreen.
Scouts debate if he’s ready, but there is some talk that the Gophers Trevor Mbakwe could look at going pro after this season.
Dave Winfield may have a prospect — his son is a sophomore at a California high school. He stands 6-foot-8 and weighs 240 pounds. He plays football and basketball and yes, the gopher coaches are aware.
