MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — This week’s “Rally Star,” a feature on local prep sports athletes, is Minnetonka’s Julie Friend.
Skipper girls’ goaltender, Friend, will attend St. Cloud State next fall. Right now, she has unfinished high school business.
Friend’s numbers tell the story of a successful season — less than a goal a game for the state’s top ranked team. It seems like her personality suits her position.
“Goal tender is kind of a unique position — you kind of stand out more than anybody else. And everybody says you have to get pass like 5 other people before you get to the goalie,” said Friend.
Part of what makes a good goalie is wanting everything that comes with the position: the pressure, the limelight, the action.
“You can kind of control a game. You know, it’s nice to feel like those 1-0 games that it’s like your team and also you do a little something,” she said. “Rather than if you win a game 6-5 (and you think) ‘Oh I let in five goals.”
And so this weekend her team begins the mission of the section tournaments which means an opportunity to make state.
“We have the team chemistry this year and we have the talent,” said Friend. “But it comes down to the section final game — you’ve got to play the best.”
