Legislator Wants To End Pay Equity Reporting

WINONA, Minn. (AP) -- A Minnesota lawmaker wants to end a state program that fines municipalities for pay inequities based on gender.

Republican Rep. Steve Drazkowski says the program is outdated and burdensome for local governments. It requires municipalities and counties to file a report on basic salary information every three years. The state fines municipalities for serious inequities in pay.

The Winona Daily News reports that in the past 14 years, 96 penalities have generated more than $1.2 million in restitution to about 1,300 employees. Drazkowski says equal pay is already protected under state and federal law.
