Restaurants Get The Sweetheart Deal On V-Day

By Liz Collin, WCCO-TV

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- On Monday, some of us will celebrate love for Valentine's Day. For many, that will mean a nice dinner out. This year, restaurants will be cashing in because of where the holiday falls on the calendar.

70 million Americans will dine at restaurants on Monday. Valentine's Day is the second most popular holiday for dining out next to Mother's Day. Most people plan to spend more than $100.

While patrons feast on their favorites this Valentine's Day, it will be the restaurants themselves getting the sweetheart deal.

"It's seldom you have a special event on a Monday or Tuesday those are generally the slowest nights of the week," said Ashlee Blaseg, general manager at Bar La Grassa.

The popular Minneapolis restaurant already has more than 300 reservations for the romance on Monday, a little more than a typical Friday or Saturday night.

Travail in Robbinsdale will be closed on Monday, but said they expect a much busier weekend with their dinner deal for two.

Mike Brown, from Travail said the long Valentine's weekend seems to be working.

"It's almost like Valentine's Day every day here," Brown said.

The restaurant has only been in business for six months. They know how important these days of celebration are.

After news of families cutting back the last couple of years on a holiday that's all about red, restaurants hope for a solid push into the black.
