Sandbag-Making Operations Begin In Fargo

FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- Volunteers came from near and far -- and behind bars -- to help with the first day of sandbagging operations in Fargo.

Sandbags are being filled at a city warehouse known as "Sandbag Central." A third straight major flood is predicted along the Red River in Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn. This is the earliest start to the flood fight.

One volunteer, Ryan Skarka, drove about 50 miles from Detroit Lakes, Minn. He says he owes something to residents of the Fargo-Moorhead area because thousands of them helped out tornado victims last summer in Wadena, Minn. His parents lost their garage and the roof of their house to the twister.

More than 20 inmates from the Cass County jail were on hand when Sandbag Central opened at 8 a.m. Monday.
