Wander Minnesota: President's Day Weekend
After our patch of spring weather, winter returns. But at least it brings a long weekend for many with President's Day. Basically that means there's a whole weekend's worth of playing to be done. Here's just a sample of what's in store.
You can get your Scottish on with a stop at St. Paul's Landmark Center Saturday or Sunday for A Scottish Ramble. Highlights include a highlands dance competition, country dance lessons, live music, storytelling, and even some Scottish food -- including haggis.
If you prefer (and you're at least 18 years old), you can get your German film fix at the Germanic-American Institute's Kinoabend on Friday night. An intriguing double feature with Klaus Kinski and Werner Herzog is on deck.
Had enough of winter? Head out to the Minnesota Zoo for the Tropical Beach Party, offered Saturday-Monday. You'll find an enormous indoor sandbox, calypso music, and, of course, exotic animals.
Still in the mood to ignore winter? Local indoor waterparks will be open for the holiday too. The Waterpark of America will have additional open hours on Monday, as will Grand Rios and the Marriott Depot. Note: these are all associated with hotels, and hotel guests have high priority, so plan to arrive early in the day to make sure you're admitted.
Over at the Minnesota Children's Museum, there's a lot going on for younger visitors, including the new LEGO Castle Adventure, appropriately divided into three separate age groups. (I have to admit I wish I was in one of these age groups -- this looks like a whole lotta fun!) Note: if you're thinking of going on Sunday, plan ahead: it's Target Free 3rd Sundays, a day of free admission, but could be crowded.
Finally, this is opening weekend for the King Tut exhibit at the Science Museum. No doubt it'll be crowded, but so worth it -- how often do we have the opportunity to see the golden shoes that adorned King Tut's feet or the jar that held his internal organs? I'll have more about this exhibit next week.
