Winter Storm Possible This Sunday

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Do you like getting slapped in the face? Open your front door and step outside. The simulation will be striking.

After a string of days boasting above-average, even reasonably "comfortable" temperatures, Friday's cool-down is a stark reminder that winter is still very much with us.

Temperatures have reverted back to a more appropriate average for this time of year, with Friday's highs expected to reach the high 20s.

Which would be bad enough were it not for the high winds that have whipped up. With gusts approaching speeds to match the current temperatures, it felt closer to 10 degrees in the Twin Cities at about 7 a.m.

The winds should remain through the rest of the day.

There may be some flurries in northern Minnesota later Friday, but that will be mere prelude to what we can expect on Sunday.

And that means that all that snow melt we've experienced over the last few days could all be for naught. Some early forecast models are predicting that parts of western and central Minnesota could get more than a foot of snow on Sunday going into Monday. The system could also bring an ice-snow mix.

The entire seven-day forecast calls for highs at or around freezing, and lows in the low teens.

Yes, winter is not over yet. Not by a long shot.
