WALKER, Minn. (AP) – The 32nd annual International Eelpout Festival is under way on Leech Lake in Walker.

Angling for the ugly, slimy fish opened Friday. More than a dozen events are scheduled including a fishing contest, polar plunge, frozen t-shirt contest, and curling with fish. Organizers hope it will draw 10,000 people to the town of 1,500. Among them will be a crew from NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” minus host Jay Leno, who’ll tape a segment to air March 3.

Unstable ice conditions have led officials to restrict vehicles on Walker Bay to snowmobiles and ATVs, but most events are easy to reach on foot.

The awards ceremony is high noon Sunday at Walker City Park. Thousands of dollars are up for grabs. The grand prize is a custom-made eelpout ice fishing house.

    Hi
Do You think??? it is a good idea to show a headline picture of the State Fish Walleye, then write “Angling for the ugly, slimy fish”. Is this good for our State?

    • Dave

      Who cares your state sucks.

      • Symantics

By the way Dave, our state does not suck, it blows.

    • Married for the money

Why did they use a picture of my ex-wife?

  • Big E

I was wondering why there’s a picture of a walleye.

    • Dwight

Have YOU ever tried to get an eelpout to smile???

  • Roger Young

    Roger Y.

Obviously, they do not know a walleye from a lawyer (or an eelpout for that matter)!

  • KEVIN

WHY SHOW A WALLEYE INSTEAD OF A LAWYER?

  • KEVIN

“LAWYER” IS ANOTHER NAME FOR EELPOUT. WONDER WHY? UGLY, SLIMY !!

    • John

Freshwater cod sounds a heck a lot better than either eelpout or lawyer and agree on the lawyer analogy. And, they are good to eat! Not lawyers, freshwater cod.
