Wis. Man Killed After Vehicle Breaks Lake Ice

HARRISON, Wis. (AP) -- An Appleton-area man is dead after his vehicle and two others plunged through the ice into Lake Winnebago.

The Calumet County Sheriff's Department says emergency crews were called to the north end of the lake just before 8 a.m. Saturday to a call of a vehicle falling through the ice.

Sheriff Mark Ott tells the Post-Crescent in Appleton that three vehicles in all ended up in the lake.

The victim is a 59-year-old man whose vehicle was submerged in about 16 feet of water. His name has not been released.

Ott says law enforcement cannot force people to stay off frozen lakes but he says it's increasingly dangerous to go on them after recent warm temperatures.
