Girl Shot In Neck Needs Place To Call Home

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- There has been another setback for a young teen who was shot in the neck, the victim of a drive by shooting.

Guadalupe Galeno Hernandez's mother wants to take her home from the hospital but can't because their home is not wheelchair accessible.

Last November, Guadalupe was shot in the neck. The bullet went through her spine, paralyzing her.

The 13-year-old has made some remarkable improvements since that tragic day and wants to go home. But her family's home is holding things up.

While the staff at Gillette Children's Hospital is treating Guadalupe well, she'd rather be home, in her own bed. The eighth grader also wants to get back to school.

"Yeah, cause I have friends there and I like my teachers," she said.

And heading home can't happen soon enough. Guadalupe will get her Halo on Friday -- a device that will help to hold her head up. Doctors say she can go home in early March. But that might not happen.

"I feel real sad because she doesn't have the house for me," said Guadalupe.

"They told her if she don't find an apartment or house they ain't going to let her go home," said Guadalupe's mother, Hilda Galeno Hernandez, through a translator.

Her family recently moved to an apartment on a first floor but there was a problem. The rooms are not big enough for Guadalupe's wheelchair.

"She said social worker went in there and seen the hallway, that the hallway was small and the door was too small," said Hilda.

So in between visiting Guadalupe at the hospital and taking care of her other two children, her mother is scrambling to find a new place to call home.

"She's looking for a house that's about 36 inches wide, the doors and the bathroom that's 36 inches wide for the wheelchair," said Hilda.

The family is also looking for a van that's wheel chair accessible. If you would like to help, you can donate to any M&I Bank.
