Boy, 6, Struck By Driver’s Side Mirror

ST. PAUL (WCCO) — St. Paul Police say they’re investigating after a hit-and-run driver struck a 6-year-old boy with a side rear-view mirror.

According to police, the incident happened at about 7 p.m. Sunday on University Avenue, west of Albert Street North.

The victim’s father said he had just parked his car on University and his son had gotten out and come around to the driver’s door.

A light blue minivan of SUV going east on University drove past, and the vehicle’s passenger side rear-view mirror clipped the boy in the head.

The victim was taken to Regions Hospital. It was determined his injuries were not life-threatening.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call 651-291-1111.

Wow – am I reading this right?
    A hit and run driver?

Not to make light of this but I can say in almost any case if I was to “clip something as small as a 6 year old as I was going by with a rear I would not even know it. Totally different than actually running into something.
The poor kid essentally walked into a mirror possibly or ???
BTW – why was he standing in the road? Okay – he was coming around. So he was in the road. The driver sadly and apparently glanced a blow off him – and I bet had no idea.
This is once again crazy sensationalizing of an accident.

and it is not a rear view mirror as they are inside. Try a side view mirror for accuracy please. :(

  • tiredandretired

6 year old boys are short enough that they might not be seen, as they step alongside your vehicle.

  • eric

How do you hit someone with a rear view mirror?
    Do they mean side mirror?

  • JamieinMN

Hello! It’s says, “SIDE REAR-VIEW MIRROR” You CAN see the side AND rear with side mirrors….

This couldn’t ended tragically, but it didn’t. He was clipped, hardly while standing in the street.

    • JamieinMN

      Oops, not couldn’t, could’ve.

      • Tim disagrees

If he was to the drivers side of his Dad’d car he WAS in the street. When you get out on that side you are in the street. If he was cloer to the car it likely would have been father-door-son all hit by the side mirror. It was not the case so he was out further. And in the street Jamie. You can remove your “hardly” comment please. ;-)

  • JamieinMN

Yea he was IN the street……..I’m unclear of where you’re trying to get with this, Tim….

  • Ed

The parent should be locked up for 10 years for not having the kid restrained in a car seat till he is 16 and allowing him/her to run wild in the streets.
You know it’s not the first time this kid has run into the street just the only time it was “clipped”, where is protective services when you need them!
Thats the Minnesota way, Oh and we need a law about side mirrors in there somewhere too.

  • Flinstone Freddy wonders

suspect this part of your post makes one seem you think he was not in the street. I read it and assumed as much until your retort too.

“He was clipped, hardly while standing in the street.”

    • JamieinMN

      I meant, HARDLY CLIPPED. Aiiiyiiiyii.

  • LAS

Why would a parent let their 6 year old child to go into the street? Lucky the kid wasn’t killed, maybe Dad will use his common sense next time and not allow the kid to exit the car until he is there to make sure he stays safe.

  • Mark from

Why is it that when a kid gets hit by a car WCCO puts it out ASAP, but when a store or a bank gets robbed and there is pictures, it’s days later? Just wondering WCCO

  • marrrrr

I have to agree with most of the comments here,The driver of the van probably didnt even realize his mirror clipped the little boy.And seriously, what parent doesnt teach their child to stay by the passenger door or even inside the vehicle until the parent comes to the passenger side to get them.Note to dad: Vans are higher than your child, take responsibility with your child. Now some driver is more than likely going to get slapped with a hit and run and some parent is going to try to sue.Hope the father gets slapped with negligence as he clearly failed to exercise the care that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in like circumstances.

  • why you should

maybe it should read “boy clips mirror”
then it’s a non-story and Mark from markswatse would have nothing to say nor do. LMAO

I have not seen the actual spot, where this took place, I’m familiar with the area.
With the lackluster plowing job ST. PAUL puts into clearing the streets, there is the likelilhood that the parking lane along the curb are choked with snow and not allowing the parked vehicles to seperate themselves from the right hand traffic lane.
That said, the father should be brought up on charges for CHILD ENDANGERMENT, on a few counts at least. Just by what has been stated by the father, and or the Police, the child came around to the driver’s side of the vehicle, CHILD NOT CONTROLLED, or SAFE GUARDED, CHILD NOT RESTRAINED IN A “TODDLER SEAT” AND RESTRAINED. The FATHER created the situation….I really doubt the that the ‘striking’ vehicle was following the Father and Son with the hopes of CLIPPING “SOMEONE” in THAT car, when they got out. IF, anybody in this is the VICTIM, it’s the poor driver that’s being accused of doing something wrong knowingly.
NEGLIGENCE is on the shoulders of the FATHER….The accident happened to the Driver of the other Car, and unfortunately the CHILD was the injured, and thankfully he’ll be well and healthy….with a valuable lesson for his young life to absorb….which will completely GO OVER the FATHER’S head as a lesson learned, I HAVE NO DOUBT!!
We’re talking about FROG TOWN here….there isn’t a plethora of intelligence that exists in this area as a foregone conclusion.
Stuck on stupid is way too popular these days…it’s like an INALIENABLE RIGHT to be as dense as possible, and blame some passerby for your own shortcomings……after all…IGNORANCE IS BLISS!

  • froggy

lol…frogtown…the only time i went there ,there was 10 year old kids selling acid(lsd)right outta there little pockets!

  • Yikers

thought the acid was from a by-gone era. Crack or such I have no doubt …. but acid huh?
The dumb little kids are played for mules — deliver and bring the dealer the cash. Friggen sad as it gets

  • JEFF (allergic to STUPID in ST.PAUL)

ON TOPIC….Froggy and Yikers are easily distracted…..Attention Deficit Disorder?
The issue is about the ‘door knob’ father and his ‘not so well taken care of ‘ little boy, allowing him to become a statistic potentially, with the “FATHER” thinking “FRIVOLOUS LAWSUIT” rather than take the blame for his absent minded procilivities, not taking care of the safety of this little 6 year old.
NOW, why should the driver be sought out to answer for ‘DOOR-KNOB’S’ lame brained disfunction. The Driver is/was victimiized by the inability of the DOOR-KNOB DADDY to handle the situation he put into play.
The VICTIMIZED Driver should be spoken to, to alleviate any negligence on his/her part, and the “DAD” can sit in court and explain his NEGLIGENCE In the safety of his SON…and the willing damage to the other Driver’s mirror, if it became broken.
My earlier comment was meant to illustrate the STUCK ON STUPID tendencies that TOO many people perpetrate on others, as in this scenario with this VERY LUCKY CHILD….>DAD<!
YEP GOOD OLD DAD just about annilhilated his young son…..because?

  • Burnsville resident

where are the fricken cops patrolling our roads for stupid drivers? I blame the fricken cops for accidents and deaths on Minnesota roadways.

  • GomersPile in TC's

I blame the stinkin’ Exxon’s … without the gas it wouldn’t have happened.
No one is smart enough to run an all electric car around here. That will pose true threats – imaginesomething stealth and quiet as a mouse gliding by….oh boy. The legal beagles must be lining up in anticipation. ;-)
