Testimony Doesn’t Match Furor Over Terror Hearing

WASHINGTON (AP) — Family members of two young men who were inspired to terrorism, with deadly consequences, plan to tell Congress that the men were victims of brainwashing by radical elements in local Muslim communities, according to prepared testimony obtained by The Associated Press.

The remarks are scheduled to be delivered as part of the House Homeland Security Committee’s hearing on Islamic radicalization Thursday. Plans for the hearing touched off days of protests from critics who liken it to McCarthyism and the era of communist witch hunts.

But at least in the prepared testimony, there’s nothing that indiscriminately labels Muslims as terrorists, as critics had feared.

The hearing has re-ignited a national debate over how to combat a spate of homegrown terrorism. The Obama administration has tried to frame the debate around radicalization in general, without singling out Muslims. Rep. Peter King, the New York Republican who called the hearing, said that’s just political correctness, since al-Qaida is the main threat to the U.S.

Melvin Bledsoe, whose son, Carlos, is charged with killing an Army private at a recruiting station in Little Rock, Ark., is scheduled to testify about his son’s conversion to Islam and his isolation from his family.

“Carlos was captured by people best described as hunters. He was manipulated and lied to,” Bledsoe says in his prepared remarks.

“I have other family members who are Muslims, and they are modern, peaceful, law abiding people,” Bledsoe’s remarks say.

He blames “the Islamic radicals who programmed and trained my son Carlos to kill.”

The committee is also scheduled to hear from Abdirizak Bihi, the uncle of a young Somali-American who was recruited by the terrorist group al-Shabab and was killed shortly after returning to Somalia.

Bihi says “99.9 percent of Muslim Somali-Americans are good citizens who are very grateful for the opportunities they have and are very busy in chasing their American dream.”

King said Muslims should not feel threatened by the hearings.

“If there is going to be animosity, I would blame it on my opponents,” King said Wednesday in a nationally broadcast interview.

At the White House, spokesman Jay Carney said, “We welcome congressional involvement in this issue.”

“In the United States, we don’t practice guilt by association,” Carney added. “We believe Muslim-Americans are part of the solution.”

Not surprising that Peter King worked with Roy Cohen, the counsel that helped
Joe McCarthy prepare his infamous trials!

  • Clint Make My Day does not like this

You gotta be getting a wee bit spooked when this kind of BS starts anew. McCarthy was freakin’ nuts. They seem to have some in both parties, but especially the GOP, who might make ol’ Joe seem sane.
    God help America

    • MARK from mntaxwaste.com

there is a big difference between Mc Carthy and Islam

      • Wesly

That is not the comparison being made. The fear is labeling all muslims as evil (as well as all far left and right politicians)

  • Rich T

Toss a white sheet atop that mangy hair, cut out the eye hole and what you have is a Grand Freako from the KKK
    sick bastid

  • Dang Straight

Next, the whack job Christians on the extreme right that want to turn the US into a theocracy.

  • Annoyed

Who killed all of our citizens? Oh yeah… the Muslims. They were only following their peaceful Quran when they did it.

    • MARK from mntaxwaste.com

    • Todd W. Olson

And they guys who blew up the Murrah Building were white Christian men. So should we have Congressional hearings on Christianity?

      • Annoyed

Should we compare how many Muslims have attacked citizens here and compare notes… in the name of religion? I didn’t think so. You can sit down now.

      • Todd W. Olson

Sure, let’s compare notes. Would you like to start with the KKK, a Christian organization responsible for the deaths of thousands of US Citizens?

    • Dang Straight

Who shoots abortion doctors and bombs their clinics? Oh yeah…………”Christians”.

Who blows up federal office buildings in Oklahoma? Oh yeah………paramilitary “Christians”.

Who protests at the funerals of fallen soldiers? Oh yeah……….”Christians”.

They were only following their peaceful Bible.

      • Look at all the stupidity!!!

Ever heard of the crusades where Christians killed Muslims by the thousands trying to take the land that they already lived on? Ever heard of what your beloved Christians did to the native Americans when they came here? If you are going to start a fight about holy wars, maybe that is not the best side to be on as they even killed Jews by the millions saying it was what god wanted. White people have killed any and every time they feel like it. Not saying that what the radical Muslims did was ok or was justified as pay back, but you have to look at the full picture if you are going to preach.

      • Annoyed

You are seriously mental. Feel free to fly on a plane full of radical Muslims and see how safe you feel. The Bible does not encourage the believers to attack and kill the infidels. The Quran does. The Bible does not say to become friends with other religious groups in order to attack them later. The Quran does. Before you attempt to try to define what the Bible says, you should read it first. Your opinions are very outdated and carry only bias towards our religion.

    Islam is like a cancer

    • max

Nope. Your ignorance is a cancer.

      • Hey there max

        nice shot there max lol

  • MARK from mntaxwaste.com

    Nice people?

    • max

You’re confusing religion with culture. Kind of like how child molestation is in direct opposition with the teachings of Christ, but Catholic priests get away with it because of a culture of silence.

      • Annoyed

Max, what you do not grasp is that in Islam the culture is the EXACT same thing. They LIVE their religion. You are obviously a liberal who needs more education. Maybe watching Muslims take over America and kill everyone else who are not Muslim will do it for you?

      • max

Do Christians not LIVE their religion? Different interpretations of sacred texts leads to different lifestyles–some of which are radically oppressive and even violent. This is true of both Islam and Christianity. It seems to me that you could stand to do a little more research.

      • GBA and I will stand by it

No I think that you are confusing a culture with a religion. There is no Sharia law in the United Stated State. I think that I will stand by that. The rugs at your feet will burn with the true knowledge. Yes there have been killings in the name of the Christan faith, but the Islamic faith says to kill anyone who does not embrace Islam. Sorry but, I shall give you lead poisoning if you try to enforce your rule on me.

      • Wesly

@GBA. From my muslim friends it says kill to defend thyself. Just like other religions (read the posts) there are all extremists. And just like every other country there is somebody willing to take advantage of someone’s stupidity.

    • Look at all the stupidity!!!

So are you saying you should shut up and be stoned?

  • Dang Straight

We get it, Mark. Not only are you greedy and self serving as per your sig, you are a bigot, too.

Look in the mirror. It ain’t pretty

    • MARK from mntaxwaste.com

@Dingo Curvy Struck a nerve did I? Go sing camp songs with them, me they better keep away.

  • MARK from mntaxwaste.com

@Dingo Dango Please learn Sharia Law fool

marky — they hiring at K-Mart again. You got fired huh?

Israel National News reports: “Ten people were killed Tuesday in a clashes between Muslims and Christian Copts in Cairo and at least 110 others were wounded, according to the Egyptian Health Ministry.

The two groups clashed in the areas of Moqattam, the Citadel and Sayeda Aisha, according to Sherif Zamel, head of emergency services.

Coptic spokesmen told news media at least six Christians were shot dead and 45 others were wounded. They placed the cause of the clash on a feud between two families, Muslim and Coptic, that resulted last week in the burning of a Coptic church in Helwan province.

The feud started when a Christian man fell in love with a Muslim woman in the town of Sol.

The Coptic Shahedain (Two Martyrs) church in the town was burned down on Friday, the Muslim Sabbath, after clashes that left two people dead.

‘Problems escalated in the village when a group of Muslims headed to the burned-out church and conducted a mass Islamic prayer there,’ Maged Ibrahim, a local Christian, explained in an interview broadcast on Egyptian state television.

The destruction was followed by a mass demonstration in Moqattam as at least 1,000 Coptic Christians this week took to the streets in protest.

Muslims opened fire on the demonstrators, according to Samann Ibrahim, a priest quoted by AFP. He also said that Muslims firebombed local houses and workplaces and hurled rocks at the protesters from both sides of the street. Soldiers at the scene just added to the chaos, firing into the air to try and bring the crowd under control…”
