Rethinking A Bill To Lift A Nuclear Moratorium?

By Steve Murphy, NewsRadio 830 WCCO

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The nuclear crisis in Japan may prompt lawmakers to revisit a nuclear moratorium bill in the Minnesota legislature.

"This is just a reminder about how risky these (nuclear plants) can be," said Democratic State Rep. Frank Hornstein, of Minneapolis.

Hornstein said the crisis in Japan should cause lawmakers to re-think a bill now in conference committee, which would lift a 17-year-old ban on new plants in Minnesota.

"What we ought to be doing in Minnesota is keeping our moratorium in place," he said. "I hope the governor will veto any bill that comes out of the legislature."

The bill lifting the ban has been pushed by the new Republican majority in both houses. It remains to be seen whether any Republicans will reconsider the moratorium measure.
