Camel Calf To Go On Exhibit At Minnesota Zoo
APPLE VALLEY, Minn. (AP) -- A Bactrian camel born just over a week ago goes on exhibit Wednesday on the Northern Trail at the Minnesota Zoo.
The male camel was born March 7 and doesn't even have a name yet. The camel weighed 125 pounds at birth. The calf was kept off-exhibit with his mother to make sure he was healthy and gaining weight.
Camels usually gain about 2 pounds a day and reach adult size of 1,600 to 1,800 pounds and 8 feet tall in three to four years.
It's the fifth calf for mom "Sanya" and the 18th for dad "Turk."
The zoo says a few Bactrian camels remain in the wild of Mongolia's Gobi Desert, but most have been domesticated.
