GOP-Backed Tax Bill Passes House Committee

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A House panel has passed a Republican-backed tax bill that would cut income taxes for Minnesotans, but could lead to property tax increases.

The Minnesota House Taxes Committee passed the bill Saturday.

It would lower income tax rates on low- and middle-income Minnesotans, but it also reduces state aid to Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth.

Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton has criticized the proposal. He's calling for an income tax hike on top earners.

Lawmakers in both chambers are facing an internal deadline of next Friday to finish bills for all areas of the state budget. The state faces a $5 billion budget deficit.
