Officials: It's Time To Protect Wells From Flooding

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Department of Health is saying that now is the time to protect private water wells from spring flooding.

Once wells are contaminated by flood water, they can be a health risk. So the department is recommending that well owners take precautions.

For example, people who depend on wells should stock up on clean water before taking the well out of service -- and then they should cut off the power to the well.

If it floods, it's a good idea to seal the well. If there is time, have a contractor install a water-tight cap. If not, use a heavy-duty trash bag or plastic sheeting secured with waterproof tape -- duct tape won't hold in a flood.

More tips are on the department's website.
